Cougar Lockback

The cougar lockback pocket knife is a smaller-sized lockback than a typical folding hunter at a closed length of 4″. It is made to be a mid-sized lockback pocket knife between the larger 5″ and smaller 3″ models and not need a sheath to carry (but can be carried easily in a 4″ sheath). This lockback pocket knife also comes with a longer matchstick thumbnail pull for easier use and operation.

Pocket knife manufacturers make lockback knives in many different styles and sizes. However to be considered an actual lockback pocket knife, the knife will feature a prominent locking mechanism adjacent to (or part of) the back-end bolster (the lockback “button”), and often times, a single blade as does the cougar. That primary locking blade is a clip point.

There are very famous models of lockbacks, the Buck 110 (see the “Folding Hunter” description page), the Case Mako, etc. The lockback really made its “claim to fame” when Buck introduced the original folding hunter in 1964, marketing it as a pocket knife that was as strong as a fixed blade.
